Proposition 84

Proponents of Proposition 50, anticipating a need for continuing funding for the IRWM program and other water and resources needs, prepared and submitted language to the California Attorney General’s office for a new water bond initiative, “Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006”. The initiative, Proposition 84 was passed by the voters in the November 2006 general election. The 2006 water bond provides $1 billion for IRWM programs throughout the state with an emphasis on local control of projects to improve water supply and water quality. Additionally, Proposition 84 allocates up to $45 million for coastal salmon and steelhead restoration programs and provides funding for other water-related projects and for parks, wildlife conservation and other purposes. The total proposed funding for the bond measure is $5.4 billion.
