Proposition 50
Proposition 50, the Water Security, Clean Drinking Water, Coastal and Beach Protection Act of 2002, was a Water Bond initiative approved by California voters in November 2002. The Integrated Regional Water Management Grant Program was created under Chapter 8 of Proposition 50 and included $380 million for the development of Integrated Regional Water Management Plans (IRWMPs) and for the funding of projects included within them. Additionally, legislation under this Chapter required that not less than 40% of IRWM grant program funding be awarded to Northern California communities. With the update of the California Water Plan in 2005, and the passage of Proposition 84 in 2006, the programmatic emphasis on integrated planning has been enhanced and expanded. Integrated Regional Water Management Planning represents a new paradigm for sustainable management of the state and the region’s resources.
