Mattole Integrated Water Management Program

Mattole Restoration Council

Mattole River Watershed, Humboldt and Mendocino counties

Project Abstract:

The Mattole Integrated Water Management Program integrates basin-wide efforts to meet water supply, water quality and salmonid habitat goals for the coastal Mattole River watershed. The Program will yield increased water supply in drought-prone areas by augmenting summertime streamflows in two critical salmon-bearing reaches (minimum of 8.8 gallons/minute during low-flow period), sediment reduction to meet TMDL and NCRWQCB Basin Plan goals (over 158,000 cubic yards stabilized), and habitat improvements (invasive plant eradication and riparian ecosystem restoration at 47 sites). A suite of effectiveness monitoring components will determine project performance and future management measures. By implementing these projects through an existing and robust watershed partnership, integrated project components will address multiple management goals for habitat and water supply.

Project Goals:

Sediment reduction in Mattole River Watershed

  • Increase in the amount of suitable habitat for salmonids (coho, chinook and steelhead) in the Mattole River watershed
  • Reduction in sediment production in treatment areas
  • Increased understanding of stream channel conditions watershed wide
Riparian reforestation and noxious weed eradication treatments
  • Significant change in vegetation composition at treatment sites through tree planting and invasive plants removal
  • Decrease in water temperature in stream reaches coincident with treatment reaches and where water temperature limits salmonid survival

Implement seasonal stream flow enhancement program

  • Sustain summer stream flows above minimum thresholds for quality aquatic habitats
  • Reduce juvenile salmonid mortality
  • Sustain water quality benefits
