Redwood Creek Erosion Control

Pacific Coast Fish, Wildlife and Wetlands Restoration Association, Humboldt County

Project Abstract

The Redwood Creek Erosion Control will implement cost-effective erosion control and erosion prevention on high priority roads, all of which are described in the Upper Redwood Creek Watershed Road Assessment: Updated Summary Report.  The project will primarily decommission roads to minimize their adverse effects on natural watershed processes.  All road treatments will prevent fill failures, stream crossing washouts and stream diversions, and the further degradation of water quality and aquatic and riparian habitat in the Redwood Creek watershed.

Project Goals

  1. The goal of this project is to improve and protect the beneficial uses of water and associated resources in the Redwood Creek watershed by reducing the potential for accelerated erosion from logging roads in the upper basin. Erosion and sediment delivery will be reduced primarily by decommissioning high priority roads. Completed basin-wide inventories and data analyses (Bundros, et al. 2004) will be used to ensure high priority roads are treated first.  Riparian conditions will also improve by reduced erosion rates.
  2. Benefit local economically disadvantaged communities through the continuation of the restoration efforts in Redwood Creek.
  3. Continue local and regional support for water quality improvements in Redwood Creek and elsewhere by demonstrating cost-effective preventative treatment of sediment sources through a cooperative partnership of public and private entities in a 303 (d) listed waterbody.
