Salt River Ecosystem Restoration

Project Abstract

The Salt River Ecosystem Restoration will: 1) address sediment and erosion in tributary watersheds of the Salt River; 2) restore fish migration and rearing habitat in the mainstem Salt River; and, 3) restore estuary habitat and tidal function in the lower Salt River. The mission of the project is to restore natural hydrologic function to the Salt River for the improvement of water quality, waste water treatment, flood control, wetlands and fisheries enhancement, ecosystem restoration and other benefits to local economic and environmental resources.

Project Goals

  1. Reduce the potential for future emergency dredging projects that would most likely occur during winter months
  2. Increase floodplain sediment storage capacity
  3. Improve fish access and habitat conditions
  4. Improve riparian ecosystem diversity
  5. Increase the ability of the City of Ferndale to comply with wastewater dilution requirements
  6. Reduce the potential for contamination of residential and agricultural areas from wastewater effluent
  7. Increase channel gradient
  8. Increase salt water influence further up the Salt River
  9. Reduce the occurrence and risk of flooding of public and private infrastructure
  10. Improve drainage conduits throughout the Salt River Delta including within the City limits of Ferndale
