Sonoma County Water Recycling and Habitat Preservation Program (Phase 2a)

City of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County

Project Abstract

Santa Rosa Urban Reuse Pilot Project involves the construction of pipelines, pump stations and filtration.  The benefits of the Santa Rosa Urban Reuse Project include improved water supply reliability; reduced conflicts; enhanced salmonid habitat because of reduced diversions from the Russian River; and water quality improvements because of reduced recycled water discharges to the Laguna de Santa Rosa and Russian River.

Project Goals

  1. To restore and enhance habitat for environmental benefit in general and for the following 7 protected species: 3 salmonids in the Russian River – Coho and Chinook salmon and steelhead; California Tiger Salamander (CTS); and 3 plants - Sonoma sunshine, Sebastopol meadowfoam, Burke's goldfields.
  2. To expand the use of recycled water for agricultural and urban irrigation to add water supply diversity and reliability to the region.
  3. Improve water quality in the Russian River and its tributaries.
  4. Remove irrigation from and restore 70 acres of habitat for CTS and 3 plant species in the Santa Rosa Plain habitat preserve near the City of Santa Rosa’s Kelly Farm near Duer Road.
  5. Redivert irrigation from the Kelly Farm to urban or agricultural reuse.
  6. Reduce agricultural diversions in sensitive areas of the Russian River and its tributaries by supplying recycled water for irrigation in the Alexander Valley area of northern Sonoma County, thereby improving habitat for 3 salmonids and restoring streamside habitat by minimizing the dewatering of Russian River tributaries.
  7. Reduce reliance on water supply diversions from the Russian River and diversify urban supplies by providing recycled water to urban sites currently supplied from the Russian River system.
  8. Reducing discharge of tertiary treated water into the impaired water bodies of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and the Russian River by instead delivering this water to urban and agricultural irrigation.
  9. Contribute to the achievement of TMDLs for the Laguna de Santa Rosa.
